Ingredients to Make Frizzled Green Beans with Crispy Shallots

To make this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 large shallots
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 lb green beans
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
  • Sea salt

Step One—Make the Crispy Shallots

In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-low heat until the oil is 350℉. Line a small plate with a paper towel and set aside.

While the oil is heating, thinly slice the shallots. To get even slices, I like to use a mandoline to slice the shallots. A sharp chef’s knife will work too.

Add the sliced shallots to the hot oil and fry, stirring frequently, until golden brown. It will take about 3-4 minutes for the shallots to turn golden. Transfer the fried shallots to the paper towel-lined plate and season with salt.

Step Two—Fry the Green Beans

Add the green beans directly into the pan you used to fry the shallots. Toss the beans to coat with the oil, then fry the beans for 2 minutes undisturbed. Flip the beans and fry for a further 2 minutes undisturbed.

Make sure the beans are completely dry before adding them to the pan; otherwise, they will sizzle and splatter like crazy in the hot oil.

Step Three—Add the Garlic, Chili Flakes, and Maple Syrup

Add the minced garlic, chili flakes, and season with salt. Fry for a further minute, then pour in the maple syrup. Toss the beans to coat and fry for a final 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 4—Plate the Frizzled Green Beans & Top with Crispy Shallots

Remove the beans from the heat and transfer to a serving dish. Top the beans with the crispy shallots and serve.
