Tzatziki Dip

I’ve been making tzatziki at home for years, so I thought it was time for me to finally share a recipe here! Tzatziki dip comes together in ten minutes with just a handful of ingredients, resulting in the creamiest and most refreshing dip. I love making tzatziki in the summer because no cooking and minimal prep are required.

Tzatziki Dip Ingredients
To make tzatziki dip at home, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup Greek yogurt
- 1/3 cup grated and strained cucumber
- 2 garlic cloves, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- Fresh black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
What’s the Best Yogurt for Tzatziki?
When making tzatziki, you want to use a thick yogurt. A plain, thick Greek or skyr yogurt will work perfectly for this recipe. I personally use the Siggi’s skyr yogurt because that’s my favourite.
What Should I Serve Tzatziki With?
Tzatziki is a very versatile dip! Here are some of my favourite things to serve it with:
- Sliced vegetable
- Pita bread or crackers (I like these ones)
- DIY At-Home Shawarma
- Crispy Garlic Potatoes
Step 1—Grate and Strain the Cucumber
Did you know that cucumbers are around 95% water by weight? That’s why it is super important to strain your grated cucumber when making tzatziki. If left unstrained, the cucumber will water down and thin out the dip.
Using a microplane grater, finely grate the cucumber. I used two Persian cucumbers to make this recipe and found they yielded the appropriate amount.
Place a fine mesh sieve over the sink or a clean mixing bowl. Transfer the grated cucumber to the sieve. Allow to drain for 5 minutes, then squish any excess liquid out with your hands. Make sure you have 1/3 cup of shredded cucumber after it has been strained.
Step 2—Fold the Tzatziki Dip Ingredients Together
Grating and straining the cucumber is the hardest part of this whole recipe (I promise!). Now that that is out of the way, we can move on to assembling the dip.
Add the thick Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, grated garlic, sea salt, pepper, and lemon juice to a small mixing bowl. Whisk well to combine. You want to make sure the cucumber and garlic are fully incorporated into the yogurt.
Step 3—Serve and Enjoy!
Transfer the tzatziki to a small serving dish, then top with the olive oil and a bit of flaky salt (optional). Serve with your favourite accompaniments—see the list above for some of mine if you need some inspiration!
Any leftover tzatziki can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days.
