During the hottest summer days I crave a delicious and refreshing açai bowl. Packed with sweet frozen fruit and antioxidant rich açai, this refreshing açai bowl is the perfect way to beat the summer heat. Seeing as we are currently in the grips of a ruthless summer heatwave here in southern Ontario, I thought this would be the perfect time to deliver this refreshing recipe to you all.

How to Make Refreshing Açai Bowls

While an açai bowl in a trendy cafe can cause upward of $15, açai bowls are actually incredibly simple to make at home. On top of that, the homemade versions are delicious and give you total freedom over your choice of toppings – score! All you need is a handful of ingredients and a good, high speed blender. I have a Certified Reconditioned Vitamix, which has never failed me.

Refreshing Açai Bowl Ingredients

To make a refreshing açai bowl, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Non-dairy milk

  • Honey
  • A pinch of sea salt

What is Açai?

Açai berries are small, dark purple berries grown on the Açai Palm in South America. Açai has become increasingly popular in the past ten years due to its high antioxidant content and other beneficial properties that are said to reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system.

Where can I Buy Açai?

Açai berry powder and frozen puree can usually be found in health food stores or the organic isle of your grocery store. Alternatively, açai powder can be purchased online.

Make the Açai Bowl Smoothie

Add the non-dairy milk, frozen fruit, açai powder, chia seeds, honey, and a pinch of sea salt to a high speed blender. Blend on high until completely smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides of the blender as necessary.

If your blender has a tamper, that can be used to scrape the sides down as you blend. If your blender does not have a tamper, you can stop the blender and use a spoon to scrape the sides as needed.

Build Your Refreshing Açai Bowl

Scoop the refreshing açai smoothie into a bowl and top with granola, berries, nut butter – or whatever your heart desires! I personally love some homemade granola, almond butter, kiwi, and blueberries. Shredded coconut or coconut flakes are also a delicious topping.

If smoothie bowls are not your thing, you can enjoy your refreshing açai in a glass sans-toppings.
